On a recent study, some clients were amusing themselves finding anagrams for their names. It amazed me how fresh and surprising completely familiar terms and words could look when rearranged, and it occurred to me that this this must be how respondents feel the first time they are exposed to a new product concept. What we have been planning, writing, revising, and envisioning for weeks, months, and sometimes years is as common to us as our first name, but to a respondent it is entirely new and requires some time to consider, adjust, and appeal. We need patience as they ponder and begin to absorb and acclimate to our ideas and positioning. As you’re writing, turn the language around with new words and try to see it with fresh perspective in order to make it as clear to the newcomer as possible.
